Do you know that? Tired skin and pale gray veil and Pigment spots . Not a pleasant memory of summer: As soon as the skin is exposed to a lot of sunlight, the body boosts its melanin production. The body's own skin pigment protects against sunburn by converting the rays into heat. It's actually clever, but if too much melanin is produced, brownish discoloration develops on the skin. This can also lead to the formation of spots (hyperpigmentation). What effectively helps in these cases: creams and serums containing the powerful active ingredient kojic acid. The still relatively unknown kojic acid also gives you the perfect glow.
KOJIC ACID: HOW DOES IT WORK IN SKINCARE?
The word "acid" never sounds very trustworthy. But acids have proven their worth in skincare for years: hyaluronic acid as a moisture booster. AHA acids – such as glycolic acid or lactic acid – for a radiant, visibly refined complexion. Or mandelic acid, which is well-tolerated by sensitive skin types and also ensures beautifully even skin. Kojic acid belongs to the group of AHA acids. It is a natural ingredient that is produced as a byproduct of the rice fermentation process (for example, for the production of Japanese rice wine). What makes kojic acid so special is its powerful lightening effect: It inhibits the body's own enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for the synthesis of melanin and thus for the formation of pigment spots. This not only fades old, unsightly discolorations, but also prevents new ones from forming.
In addition, kojic acid literally triggers the skin: It effectively boosts the body's own cell production, thus accelerating the skin renewal process. Dry, dull patches disappear in an instant, and the complexion looks fresher, firmer, and more even. Another plus: After a treatment with AHA acid, any skincare ingredients are better absorbed.
SKIN CARE: HOW TO USE KOJIC ACID CORRECTLY
Kojic acid is often found in creams and serums in combination with other AHA acids. When applied morning and evening after cleansing, it gives the skin a radiant glow. However, it's important to apply UV protection at the same time—even in the gray winter months. Very sensitive skin types should approach the acid gradually. It's best to test it once or twice a week to see if your skin tolerates it well.
